about
“Grandfather’s Table” tells a story of how relationships with loved ones morph over time and fizzle out, often due to circumstances beyond our control. And sometimes we end up with that person’s grandfather’s furniture after all is said and done, eating at the table with only its memories to haunt us.
lyrics
You can't have your cake and eat it, too
That's just not a thing that you can do
You can try, you can try to wash it down
but the milk will choke you up, the cake on the ground
I'm sorry not everything's going exactly right for you
And you still haven't found the thing that you really want to do
but if you keep letting yourself get knocked I'm not sure I can fight for you
And I'll tell it as a cautionary fable
the one where I end up with your grandfather's table
We can pretend like it never even happened and we were just friends from the start
We can eat all our meals at this table and pretend we're not apart
but the oak will laugh, the varnish will peal, and it'll end up on the pavement
And I'll tell it as a cautionary fable
the one where I end up with your grandfather's table
